This Day That Age
J. Drobny, idol of Wimbledon crowds since the war and champion in 1954, went out in the first round of the 1956 Wimbledon championships on the Centre Court, scene of many of his triumphs, conquered by 19-year-old R. Krishnan of Madras, India's No.1, who won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Krishnan meets Candy of Australia next. The Czechoslovak-born left-hander looked only a shadow of the hero who two years ago was cheered when he won the coveted title in his seventh attempt. His 34 years weighed heavily upon him on June 25 and he never really got into the game against a vigorous and extremely fast opponent who maintained pressure from start to finish. The powerfully built Indian used his fine physique to good advantage with a power game and it was his splendid volleying which paved the way to victory. He entered the match with the confidence of a win over Drobny in the Northern tournament at Manchester just over a year ago. Drobny has competed in 13 successive Wimbledon tournaments and this is the first time he has been beaten in the opening round.
