Fake currency notes seized

BANGALORE: The Ulsoor Gate police have arrested two persons and seized from them fake currency notes in the denominations of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 with a face value of Rs. 3.25 lakh.

The police said Shankar Kumar (30) of Vellore district in Tamil Nadu and Shanmugam (39) of Kolar Gold Fields were arrested near the Kalamma Temple on Nagarathpet Main Road when they were allegedly trying to circulate fake currency notes. The police also seized from them a motorcycle and two mobile phones. A case has been registered in the Ulsoor Gate police station. — Staff Reporter

Special train to Patna

BANGALORE: South Western Railway has announced a special train from Bangalore to Patna. The train (6595-A) will leave Bangalore on June 28 at 11.50 p.m. and arrive in Patna on July 1 at 4.05 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Heavy rain in Kodagu district

Madikeri: Monsoon has been active all over Kodagu district in the past three days. In the past 24 hours, Talacauvery recorded a rainfall of 106.8 mm, Bhagamandala 102.6 mm rainfall, Madikeri 67.55 mm, Virajpet 49 mm, Somwarpet 29.53 mm, Srimangala 35.60 mm, Ponnampet 40 mm, Gonicoppa 35 mm, and Napoklu 44.6 mm. The water level in the Harangi reservoir on Monday was 2,838.37 ft as against the maximum level of 2,859 ft. (The water level in the corresponding period last year was 2,807.46 ft.) The Harangi reservoir area received 12 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours. — Staff Correspondent

Free diploma course

in theatre

BANGALORE: Ranga Adhyayana Kendra, a theatre institute at Bhandarkar's College at Kundapura, is organising a one-year free diploma course in theatre in collaboration with the National School of Drama Regional Resource Centre. Directors such as Kannay Lal and Bahurul Islam will train students. Twenty students will be admitted. SSLC is the minimum qualification. VHP leader criticises Centre

BAJPE: Leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishat (VHP) Ashok Singhal on Monday criticised the Centre for "neglecting" internal security concerns. Addressing presspersons here on his way to Dharmasthala to attend a three-day conclave of the Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he urged the Centre to immediately take steps to curb infiltration. — Special Correspondent

Novel protest

DAVANGERE: Supporters of Mahima Patel, MLA, protested against the denial of a ministerial berth to their leader in the recent Cabinet expansion, here on Sunday. The protestors took out a procession carrying two parrots in cages and set free one of them, depicting Mr. Mahima Patel, who has resigned from the post of secretary general of the party. Kolenahalli Satish, Janata Dal (S) leader and APMC director, criticised former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda for "betraying" Mr. Mahima Patel and accommodating his son, H.D. Revanna, in the Cabinet. He said Mr. Gowda had "failed" to recognise the organisational abilities of Mr. Mahima Patel. He also criticised M.P. Prakash for accepting the Cabinet berth. — Staff Correspondent

Pen-down strike

Bidar: Employees of the Revenue Department will go on a pen-down strike across the district on Tuesday seeking action against some members of the Bar Association of Bhalki, who allegedly assaulted a few staff at the tahshildar's office on Monday. The State Government Employees' Association has extended its support to the strike. In a press release, association secretary Mounish Lakha said the strike would be intensified if action was not initiated against the accused. — Staff Correspondent

Viral fever

BHADRAVATI: Several hospitals here, including THE Government General Hospital, are flooded with patients suffering from viral fever during the past week. Most of the patients have reported symptoms of body pain, cough, and headache. The viral fever, which is rampant in the city extensions like Hosamane, Old Town, and Bhadra Colony, is spreading to rural areas such as Donabaghatta, Tadasa, Kadadakatte, and Arebilichi. The blood samples of those, who were treated for viral fever in the hospitals, were sent to the special unit of viral fever at Victoria Hospital in Bangalore for examination. But none of the cases had been confirmed as chikungunya. — Correspondent

Bidar: Roopa Diwakar took charge as the Superintendent of Police of Bidar district on Monday. She is the first woman to head the police force in the district. She is the wife of Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat Munish Moudgil. — Staff Correspondent

Arrested

DHARWAD: The Dharwad police have arrested two chain snatchers and confiscated gold jewellery estimated at Rs. 42,000 and seized a motorcycle used for the crime. In a press release, the police gave the names of the arrested as Chandrakanth Fakirappa Hoolikatti and Iranna Gadigeppa Harikoppa of Yettinagudda in Dharwad. A case has been registered at the Dharwad Suburban Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

Bangalore: The Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Science (SALIS), Chennai, has awarded its prestigious Dr. Harish Chandra-Sushila Chandra Best Librarian National Award, 2006 to P.V. Executive chairman of legal services authority

Bangalore: V. Gopala Gowda, judge of the Karnataka High Court, has been nominated as the Executive Chairman of the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority by Governor T.N. Chaturvedi. The notification was issued by the Government on June 23. Mr. Gopala Gowda is the fourth executive chairman of the authority. — Staff Reporter

Two trains to become super-fast

MANGALORE: The Chennai Mail from Mangalore and the Mangalore Mail from Chennai are being upgraded to super-fast trains from July 1.

According to Siddharth Tirkey, Deputy Commercial Manager, Southern Railway, the train numbers will also change. The Chennai Mail will be 2601 and the Mangalore Mail 2602. The time of departure and arrival will remain the same for now.

A second-class ticket to Chennai will cost Rs. 174, with a supplementary charge of Rs. 10. A sleeper ticket will cost Rs. 278, with Rs. 20 as supplementary charge. There will be a supplementary charge of Rs. 30 for first class and air-conditioned coaches. — Special Correspondent

`Olympics Day Run' in Dharwad

HUBLI: In an attempt to foster the spirit of the Olympics among people, especially the youth, the Dharwad district administration, in association with the Karnataka Olympic Association, has organised an `Olympics Day Run' in Dharwad on July 2. The event is open to all.

The Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation is sponsoring the event, and a certificate of participation will be given all participants, according to a press release issued here.

The run will begin from R.N. Shetty Stadium in Dharwad at 8 a.m. and end at the same venue. There is no registration fee for the event. — Staff Correspondent

House mourns former MLA

BANGALORE: The Legislative Assembly on Monday mourned the death of C.M. Churchihalamath, a former member of the House, on Wednesday last.

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Because of work on charging the underground power cable network, power supply in the following areas of Hubli will be disrupted on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The areas affected are: Basava Vana, Old Bus Stand, Traffic Island, Mayur Hotel, Eureka Towers, Station Road, Lamington Road, J.C. HUBLI: Nearly 200 people were screened at the Free Bone Density Check up and Treatment Camp organised by the Indian Red Cross Society (IRC), Hubli, in association with the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation at Chitaguppi Hospital here on Saturday. Ban relaxed

PANAJI: The Goa Government on Monday announced a partial relaxation on fishing ban by exempting the motorboats from the ban from July 15. An agreement to this effect was reached at a meeting of traditional canoe owners and trawler owners convened by Minister for Fisheries Joaquim Alemao. — Staff Correspondent
