BANGALORE: Traffic was affected in central parts of Bangalore for nearly three hours on Monday when the Karnataka State Government Daily Wage Employees' Federation and the Kannada Rakshana Vedike took out separate rallies in support of their demands.

Demanding regularisation of their services, thousands of daily wage employees from across the State took out a procession from Chikkalalbagh to Jakkarayanakere, near Malleswaram. Federation president K.S. Sharma addressed the employees at a public meeting held at Jakkarayanakere

Hundreds of Kannada Rakshana Vedike activists marched from near Ananda Rao Circle and tried to move towards the Chief Minister's home office, `Krishna,' on Kumara Krupa Road.

Stopped by police

But the police stopped them on Palace Road and prevented them from proceeding towards `Krishna.' The police suggested to the activists to go Bannappa Park and hold a meeting there.

When the activists did not budge, the police assured them that a delegation of their leaders would be allowed to meet Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy after the legislature session was over.

Later, the delegation met Mr. Kumaraswamy and submitted a memorandum listing their demands. The introduction of Kannada as the medium of instruction in schools, supremacy for Kannada and Kannadigas in government institutions and prominence to Kannadigas in the posting of officials to Belgaum district were among the demands.

In view of the two rallies, traffic was held up at Ananda Rao Circle, the Majestic area, Okalipuram, Rajajinagar entrance, Platform Road, Sampige Road, Seshadri Road, Palace Road and surrounding areas from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Even the movement of buses was affected around the Kempe Gowda Bus Station.
