Congress resumes dharna in Council

Staff Reporter

Party wants administrator appointed for Bellary corporation

BANGALORE: Acting Chairman of the Legislative Council Sachidanand L. Khot on Monday adjourned the House for some time when Congress members resumed their dharna, which they began on Thursday. They were demanding the immediate appointment of an administrator for the Bellary Municipal Corporation as the tenure of the elected body had expired.

On Thursday, the Congress members objected to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy seeking a fortnight's time to reply to a question tabled by K.C. Kondaiah about the failure to appoint an administrator to look after the affairs of the civic body.

Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy had refused to yield to the demand, stating that the Government was making efforts get a stay order on the issue vacated.

Any discussion of the matter now would amount to taking up a subject that was sub judice. The High Court was seized of the matter, he had said.

On Monday, the House, which was to assemble at 12.15 p.m., met only at 1.15 p.m. after Mr. Khot held a meeting to try and sort out the issue. When the House assembled, the Congress members refused to budge from the stand they took on Thursday despite repeated requests from the Chair and Mr. Shankaramurthy.
