Tracing the evolution of Bangalore city

Staff Reporter

`Deccan Traverses — The Making of Bangalore's Terrain' released

BANGALORE: The book, "Deccan Traverses — The Making of Bangalore's Terrain," was launched by Governor T.N. Chaturvedi at Raj Bhavan here on Monday.

Authors Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha spoke on the city's evolution and its landscape, which is criss-crossed by a tank system.

"Tanks formed an intricate system under the city and across it. We have an ingenious system that has rendered rivers unnecessary," Mr. Cunha said.

The city's tank beds have now turned venues of political meetings and social gatherings, he said.

The book has artistically and scientifically traced the growth of the city.

Through the text, drawings, photographs, and historic maps, the book has traversed the city's extraordinary landscape. Going beyond mere cartography, the authors have delved deep into the battle drawings and route surveys that have developed the language of today's maps.

Ms. Mathur said the Lalbagh rock was 3.5 billion years old. "It was before the evolution of the continents," she said.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy received the first copy of the book.

He spoke of the infrastructure problems and traffic woes faced by the city.
