Pondicherry: Poll related materials and also ballot boxes have been despatched on Monday to the polling stations for the second phase of polling scheduled to be held on Tuesday covering Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipal councils and the Villianoor commune panchayat in Pondicherry region. The District Collector cum District Election Officer G. Theva Needhi Dhas supervised the dispatch of the materials from Bharathidasan Government College for women to all the polling stations in the two municipal council limits and the commune panchayat block. While Pondicherry municipality has a total of 205 booths, 174 booths have been set up at the Oulgaret municipality. The Villianoor commune panchayat has a total of 181 booths and the voters in the commune panchayat would cast three ballots (one each for electing councillor, the village panchayat ward member and the village panchayat president), while the voters in municipal polls would cast two votes (one each for election of the chairman and the councillor). The colour of ballot papers would be different for the ward members and chairman and the village panchayat presidents. The State Election Commission had also deployed the officials to man the booths and they had already been trained on various aspects of operation of the polling. Polling commences tomorrow at 7 a.m. and would go on until 5 p.m. The scale of campaign for Pondicherry and Oulgaret municipal polls by political parties had been such that they feel that it is politically most significant battle as the territorial limits of the municipal limits cover a number of Assembly constituencies within their fold. Police personnel including the Rapid Action Force, the India Reserve Battalion and also Pondicherry Armed Police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order.
