SINGAPORE: S. Samy Vellu, who has completed 25 years as the President of the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), on Sunday vowed to stay on at the helm, even as the party, which shares power with the United Malays National Organisation, ended its 60th annual general assembly in Kuala Lumpur. Asked by the media when he might step down as the MIC President, given his long reign, Mr. Samy Vellu said: "When the right time comes, I will announce it." He felt buoyed by the results of the latest party elections, in which his close lieutenant G. Palanivel defeated the long-time Deputy President Subramaniam. Later, Mr. Samy Vellu pledged to work for the emergence of "the new Malaysian Indian" who would be able to ride the tide of change and challenges.
