BELGAUM: While people in Belgaum and Khanapur taluks are waiting for a respite from the continuous rainfall, farmers in rest of the district are in despair for want of rain. Heavy rains occurred in Belguam and Khanapur taluks during the past four days. The poor families living in slums and low-lying areas are struggling to cope with water logging. Schoolchildren, with no transport, are the worst hit by the rain. Belgaum recorded 20 mm and Khanapur 28.40 mm of rainfall. While Gokak and Ramdurg did not receive any rain in the last 24 hours, Hukkeri received 3 mm, Chikkodi 1.3 mm, Athani 0.3 mm, Bailhongal 0.8 mm and Saundatti 3.4 mm of rainfall. Meanwhile, there has been a spurt in the number of suspected cases of chikungunya. According to official sources, more than 1,200 cases of chikungunya had been reported in different hospitals and health centres in 10 taluks of the district.
