Villagers protest against bad roads in Hubli

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Farmers of Mantur and Virapur villages near Hubli staged a "rasta roko" for a while in front of the office of Public Works Department in Hubli on Monday They were protesting against bad condition of the road between the villages, for which they blamed the officials of the Public Works Department.

Hubli Taluk Panchayat president Gadigeppagouda Kallimani, who led the protest, alleged that the officials were apathetic towards the inconvenience caused to villagers. Although the roadwork was sanctioned and was started eight months ago, there had been no improvement in the condition of the road because of the slow pace of the work. Now, with the onset of monsoon, the situation had even worsened, he said.

The protesters parked a tractor and bullock carts to block the traffic. They alleged that because of the pathetic condition of the road, even some bullocks had been injured while pulling carts.

They withdrew their agitation only after the fficials assured them of taking steps early to solve the problem.
