Imam denies issuing fatwa

Special Correspondent

Kolkata: Imam of the Tippu Sultan mosque Nurur Rehman Barkati, who allegedly announced a reward of Rs. 50,000 to anyone who would smear black paint on the face of the controversial Bangladeshi writer, Taslima Nasreen, while speaking to a local television channel on Sunday, denied that he had issued any fatwa against her.

"I have been misquoted," he told newspersons after he was summoned by Prasun Mukherjee, Commissioner of Police, to explain his remark to the television channel. "A fatwa cannot be issued verbally. It has to be put down in a written form. I have not issued such a decree," he said.

Mr. Mukherjee said the Imam told him that some person might have raised the demand for smearing black paint on the face of the writer, when her works were being discussed at a meeting among a section of leaders of the Muslim community.
