Sea walls in erosion-prone areas soon: Minister

`All steps to rehabilitate those affected'


  • 838 houses damaged in rain during the last 24 hours
  • 29 houses destroyed completely, 800 houses partially

    ALAPPUZHA: The State Government would take steps to construct sea walls along the coastal areas of the State threatened by sea erosion as per a suggestion of the Twelfth Finance Commission, Minister for Cooperation G. Sudhakaran said.

    Talking to reporters after visiting the sea erosion-hit areas in Alappuzha district,

    Mr. Sudhakaran said the Government had given orders to the officials to strengthen sea walls that were dilapidated. He said the Government would take all steps to rehabilitate those who had been affected by sea erosion.

    Funeral held

    Meanwhile, the funeral of Karunakaran (45), Anchuthykkal House Thycattusseri, and Nani Amma (85), Chakolil Kizhakkathil House, Vettuveni, Haripad, who were killed in monsoon-related calamities on Sunday was held on Monday.

    Karunakaran was drowned in Vembanad lake while fishing and Nani Amma was drowned after she fell into flooded paddy field.

    An official release said as many as eight hundred and thrity eight houses were damaged in the district in heavy rain in the last 24 hours.

    While twenty-nine houses were destroyed completely, more than eight hundred houses were damaged partially.
