B.K. Chandrashekar in race for Council post

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: Former Minister and Congress leader B.K. Chandrashekar is tipped for the chairmanship of the Legislative Council. His name is being considered by the Congress High Command, it is learnt.

The post is vacant following the retirement of V.R. Sudarshan, who has been re-elected to the House. Mr. Sudarshan is said to be keen on returning to active politics and does not want to seek election as chairman. Under the rules of the Legislative Council, the Deputy Chairman can remain active in politics. Deputy Chairman of the Legislative Council Sachidanand Khot of the Janata Dal (Secular) is officiating as Chairman.

Sources in the Congress told The Hindu that the name of Prof. Chandrashekar was earlier under consideration by the Congress High command for appointment as Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House. Now that the position has been given to H.K. Patil, Prof. Chandrashekar may be fielded as the party candidate for the post of Chairman of the House.

Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy was on Monday re-appointed as Leader of the House in the Council.
