Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
Members of the Legislative Council from the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party wore black "angavastrams" to the House on Monday to mark the 31st anniversary of the imposition of Emergency.
Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy said that by imposing Emergency on June 25, 1975, the then government at the Centre suspended the fundamental rights of the people. Many leaders were jailed for over a year for no specific reason, he said. Leader of the Opposition H.K. Patil said Mr. Shankaramurthy was trying to convert the House into his personal political forum. Congress leaders had strengthened democracy, he said.
