Bangalore: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi said on Monday that education among people was essential for the development of society. Inaugurating an international conference on Integrated Value Education here, he said education liberated the human mind to look into the problems without bias. Mr. Chaturvedi said in the Indian cultural context, the purpose of life was Satyam (truth), Shivam (good), and Sundaram (to seek). He said bringing harmony among the people in the world and uniting the minds and hearts should be the goal of education. Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said though modernisation had influenced education, inculcation of values through education was important. The Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said education was like a fragrance which no one could stop from spreading. He said value education should be provided to all generations. He said Washington D.C had 50 per cent dropouts and there was no data about school dropouts in third world countries. The three-day conference is organised by The Art of Living in association with the Indian National Commission for Cooperation, the UNESCO and Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. Sayyid Susan Al-Said, princess of the Sultanate of Oman; Ina Cronje, Provincial Minister of Education, South Africa; Mikhail Darchiev, Parliament member, Russia; and Reita Louise Hofmeyr, Director of Arts in the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture in Namibia, Russia, were present.
