Sushma remarks: Sikhs urged to boycott BJP

New Delhi: The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) on Sunday called for a boycott of the BJP by the community in the wake of its leader Sushma Swaraj's insistence that Chandu, a courtier with Mughal emperor Jehangir, had little role in the martyrdom of Guru Arjun Dev.

The DSGMC passed a resolution to this effect, its president Harvinder Singh Sarna said. ``The comments by Sushma Swaraj amount to distortion of history. She should apologise to the Sikh community,'' he said.

The resolution called on the Sikh community to boycott the BJP till Ms. Swaraj apologised for her comment.

At a women's seminar at Taran Taran on June 14 to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of the fifth guru, Ms. Swaraj had allegedly described Chandu as a mere Mughal employee who carried out royal orders. In her clarification, Ms. Swaraj had on Saturday said that she did not concoct the story but quoted excerpts from a book "Pancham Guru, Jeevani Guru Arjan Dev", by Satbir Singh. -- PTI
