Expressway still under consideration: Joseph

Staff Reporter

P.J. Joseph says proposal for north-south highway is also being examined.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The previous Government's Expressway proposal is still under Government consideration, Public Works Minister P. J. Joseph has said.

Replying to questions in the Assembly on Monday, Mr. Joseph said the Government had entrusted a private company with the task of preparing a detailed project report, but the work had come to halt following public resistance. The proposal to construct a north-south highway is also being examined. A final decision would be made only after getting the preliminary report.

Latest technology

Mathew T. Thomas, Minister for Transport, Printing and Stationery, said the latest technology would be adopted for modernising the Printing Department. The department would soon launch a website so that the public could easily access Government gazettes without any hitch. Networking and renovation of Government presses had also been planned.

In reply to another question, Mr. Thomas said corruption was rampant in the Motor Vehicle Department. As part of the computerisation project for the department, a new system, Fully Automated Service in Transport (FAST), had been introduced. The computerisation of the Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram Regional Transport Offices had been completed. Labour and Excise Minister P. K. Gurudasan said the previous United Democratic Front Government had given licences to 79 bars. Sixteen licences were issued according to a High Court order.

The Government would consider requests to open new outlets of the Kerala State Beverages Corporation. It would reconsider the decision to close down liquor shops on the first day of every month.
