Measures to prevent dengue

NEW DELHI: With the monsoon just a few days away, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday announced several measures for prevention and control of dengue and malaria in the Capital.

MCD Standing Committee Chairman Jai Kishan Sharma held a high-level meeting at Town Hall and directed senior officials to take all necessary measures to check mosquito breeding and augment health facilities at various hospitals.

The civic body would also screen films on dengue prevention on TV, air messages on radio and publish advertisements in newspapers to enhance public awareness.

"Drugs are not child's play''

NEW DELHI: "Drugs are not child's play'' is the theme for this year's International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Announcing this here on Monday, Heart Care Foundation of India president K. K. Aggarwal said the latest estimates indicate that 20 crore people, or 5 per cent of the global population aged between 15 and 64, have consumed illicit drugs at least once in the past 12 months. Drugs affect children of all ages.

"Parents should protect their children. They can ensure that the child's home is a safe environment and that they are aware of the dangers associated with drug abuse. Teachers and social workers have a role to play by watching out for warning signs."

Jagannath Rath Yatra today

NEW DELHI: To coincide with the Jagannath Rath Yatra at Puri in Orissa, Shri Jagannath Mandir and Orissa Arts and Cultural Centre here are organising a Rath Yatra on Tuesday. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will be the chief guest.

The Rath Yatra will begin from the temple at Tyagaraja Nagar near Safdarjung Bus Terminal and pass through Vikas Sadan and INA Market before returning to the temple.

Another Rath Yatra is being organised by Sree Neelachala Seva Sangha Delhi from Hauz Khas to Aurobindo Marg, Yusuf Sarai and AIIMS residential area before returning to the temple.

"Save the freedom of Press at all costs''

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Union of Journalists renewed its pledge to "save the freedom of the Press at all costs'' at a meeting here on Monday to coincide with the 31st anniversary of imposition of the Emergency in the country.

Veteran journalists spoke on "the attempts to muzzle the Fourth Estate and silence the voice of dissent''. They addressed several issues including "new curbs on the freedom of the Press in the post-globalisation era''.
