Channel to focus on contemporary music

KOCHI: FM Rainbow, a new channel from the Kochi FM (frequency modulated) Station of All India Radio (AIR), was launched by Brijeshwar Singh, AIR Director-General, at a function here on Monday. The channel will be available at 107.5 MHz from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.

Sebastian Paul, MP, who was the chief guest at the inaugural function, and M.K. Sanoo, critic, offered felicitations.

Ormikkan Omanikkan, an album containing a collection of old Malayalam light songs from AIR archives, was released by Mr. Singh by handing over the first copy to the actor Kaviyoor Ponnamma. J. Kamalanathan, Station Director, AIR, Thiruvananthapuram, proposed a vote of thanks.

After the inaugural ceremony, Mr. Singh told presspersons that AIR was planning to launch three more FM Rainbow channels this year. These would be aired from Kanpur, Kohima and Itanagar stations.

The channel was now being aired from seven stations, including Kochi, Mr. Singh said. Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, Bhatinda in Punjab, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Visakhapatanam in Andhra Pradesh and Goa were the others.

Mr. Singh said the channel was aimed at the younger generation, focussing mainly on contemporary music.

The channel will be multi-language, aiming at metros where more than one language was commonly spoken.
