Firm director held in bank fraud case

NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old corporate finance director of a South Delhi-based firm has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch on charges of duping various banks of Rs.35 crores by fraudulently obtaining loans. The company's joint director was arrested earlier this year.

According to the police, the Jammu and Kashmir Bank authorities had lodged a complaint alleging that Praveen Juneja, the corporate finance director of Shamkeen Spinners Limited, had duped the bank of Rs.5 crores by taking a loan on the pretext of buying some machinery from a fictitious company.

Investigations revealed that he along with the company's joint director, Amit Chaturvedi, had taken loan to buy the same machinery from five other banks. Subsequently, Mr. Chaturvedi was arrested this April. Both the accused are chartered accountants.

Mr. Juneja also owns a chain of restaurants named "Moti Mehal Deluxe Tandoori Trail" in different parts of the country and some "Subways" in the Capital.

Shopkeeper found

dead inside shop

NEW DELHI: A 55-year-old shopkeeper was found stabbed to death inside his shop at Chandni Chowk here on Sunday. The police suspect it to be a case of personal enmity.

According to the police, the murder came to light around 8 p.m. when the area security guard found the door of Sunderlal Jain's sari shop ajar. When he entered, he saw Sunderlal lying in a pool of blood. He immediately alerted the market association members, who informed Sunderlal's family and called in the police.

Initial probe revealed that nothing was missing from the shop. Sunderlal had been stabbed several times, suggesting that it was a case of personal enmity. However, the police are probing all angles.

Gang of inter-state burglars busted

NEW DELHI: Police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of inter-state burglars with the arrest of three people from North East Delhi.

Shakil alias Nawab (28), Dilshad alias Mota (18) and Sheru (22) were arrested on Saturday from Shahdara.

Police said three cases of burglary had been solved with their arrest.

Police recovered Rs.5,000, a colour television, fridge, computer, three gas cylinders, four briefcases and one handbag from them.

Shakil had also been involved in two cases of Arms Act and NDPS Act, police added.

Two children killed

in accident

NEW DELHI: Two children were killed and three sustained injuries when a Tata 709 hit them at Nandnagri in North-East Delhi on Monday.

The accident took place around 2 p.m. when the vehicle hit the victims. They were rushed to hospital where Ajay (4) and Nanhi (6) were declared dead on arrival. The driver has been arrested.

Fire in cardboard factory

NEW DELHI: A fire swept through a cardboard factory in Piragarhi area of South-West Delhi on Monday morning.

Twenty-five fire tenders were sent to douse the blaze which began at Udyog Vihar in Piragarhi's `H' Block at 11.23 a.m., according to the fire brigade.

So far, no casualties or injuries have been reported.
