39,336 died in road accidents in six years

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Road accidents in the State have claimed 39,336 lives and caused injuries to 2,94,931 people in the past six years.

Home Minister M.P. told Basavaraj Rayaraddi (Congress) during Question Hour that 2,27,601 accidents had been reported from 2001 to 2006. In Bangalore city alone, 5,011 people died and 43,641 were injured in accidents during the same period.

The Government had initiated several measures, such as installation of reflectors at curves, to reduce accidents. In 36 locations Statewide, patrol vehicles had been deployed to render assistance to victims of accidents. Under the Karnataka Health System Development Project, 34 trauma centres and 10 centres had been set up for treating those injured in accidents, he said.

Mr. Prakash said there was no move to ban from the road vehicles more than 15 years old.

Mr. Rayaraddi suggested to the Government to impart at least a week's training to drivers every year, a measure, which, he said, would help bring down the number of accidents.

Roshan Baig (Congress) suggested that the recommendations of C. Dinakar, former Director-General and Inspector-General of Police on traffic management and reduction of accidents be implemented.
