The interview with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee (June 26) was informative. Mr. Bhattacharjee's assertion that a significant portion of the electorate voted against the ruling front in the May 2006 Assembly election and that his government cannot ignore these people shows his desire for a strong Opposition.

Mr. Bhattacharjee has in the most unambiguous terms highlighted the Left Front's alternative on development and this gives hopes to all who clamour for India's growth. He has made it clear that along with land reforms, he is trying to "attract investment in industry and in infrastructure ... to increase employment opportunities." This approach is sure to remove the fears of investors both within the country and abroad.
