Status quo on bus stand proposal

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has ordered status quo on a proposal of the Tindivanam municipality to convert the Tindivanam Eri (lake) into a new bus stand

A Division Bench comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice V. Dhanapalan ordered status quo for two weeks, on a petition filed by S. Venkatesan. The petitioner sought to declare a resolution passed at the municipality to convert the lake into bus stand as illegal, arbitrary and contrary to law.

He said the lake was filled with water even today and that constructing a new bus stand at the place would bring no good in any manner to any of the general public. Maintaining that the proposal would result in depletion of water sources in Tindivanam, the petitioner said it would also flood the town during rains.

When the Government has already issued an order to establish the bus stand at a Wakf Board land the municipal council had no jurisdiction to pass the impugned resolution, he said. Also, even while spending crores of rupees on protecting and reclaiming water bodies the Government cannot accord sanction to such proposals, he contended. Besides seeking to quash the impugned resolution, the petitioner wanted the court to direct the local body to implement the earlier proposal on Wakf Board land.
