Haryana not to raise bus fares

Government working on bus passenger insurance scheme, says Transport Minister

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government does not propose to enhance bus fares following the recent increase in the prices of diesel and petrol, Transport Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala said here on Tuesday.

Talking to media persons at the Press Club, he said the Government was still contemplating the possibility of introducing a bus passenger insurance scheme on the pattern of Himachal Pradesh. He claimed that efforts were on to improve the efficiency of bus drivers and conductors for which an orientation course would be started.

More drivers and conductors would be appointed. And they would be taught Yoga to relieve them from stress. These efforts would further reduce the rate of accidents which was among the lowest in the country with 0.08 per one lakh kilometer.

On the demand for constituting a separate Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee in Haryana, he said the Congress felt that the Sikhs of Haryana should have the right to form their separate SGPC. But as there were someConstitutional and legal implications, a committee had been constituted under the chairmanship of the Agriculture Minister, H.S. Chatha, and it would submit its report shortly.

Replying to a question regarding the new list of office bearers of the Haryana unit of the Congress released by the party High Command, he said that the party had passed a resolution authorizing the AICC President, Sonia Gandhi, to appoint the office bearers. The list had many new faces and most of them were young. The new people should be given a chance, he added.

He further said that the State Government had urged the International Airport Authority of India to provide a place to the Haryana Transport Department to park its bus for sometime outside the Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi so that apart from dropping the passengers, it may also provide them the facility to return from the airport.
