Do not extend military help to Sri Lanka: PMK leader

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss on Tuesday demanded that the Union Government take into confidence the Tamil Nadu Government and the State's political leaders before taking any action on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

Urging the Centre not to extend any military assistance to the island-nation, Dr. Ramadoss, in a statement, said India's help to Sri Lanka should be such that it ensured equal rights to Tamils on a par with Sinhalese. Otherwise, any military assistance would not help in resolving the problem.

On providing weapons, he said a distinction should be made between the island-nation and other countries. In respect of Sri Lanka, the possibility of weapons being used against Tamils should not be lost sight of.
