Jayalalithaa criticises DMK's stand on NLC divestment

CHENNAI: "Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi should ask the Union Ministers belonging to his party to quit if he is really against the disinvestment of 10 per cent of shares in the Neyveli Lignite Corporation," said All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa here on Tuesday.

Describing Mr. Karunanidhi's opposition to the disinvestment after the DMK Ministers extending support to it as nothing but double standards, Jayalalithaa said the DMK had a collective responsibility in the Centre's decision and if it said that it was not a party to it then the DMK Ministers should resign on moral grounds.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said that nobody would believe Mr. Karuanidhi's statement that he was not aware whether the DMK Ministers participated in the Cabinet meeting. If the Ministers had given their approval without his knowledge, was it not the duty of Mr. Karunanidhi to pull them for supporting the move and ask them to resign from the Ministry, she asked.

Condemning the DMK's decision to participate in the NLC workers agitation on July 4 against the disinvestment, Ms. Jayalalithaa said that the party was making a mockery of the issue by agitating against its own decision.

The DMK's stand clearly exposed Mr. Karunanidhi's "true colour." She wanted other trade unions to oppose the participation of the DMK union in the proposed agitation.

The Anna Thozhilsangam, affiliated to the AIADMK would participate in the agitation, she added.
