Civil Supplies Corporation achieves paddy procurement target

S. Vydhianathan

  • Procurement of paddy touched 12.10 lakh tones on Monday
  • Except 3.75 lakh tonnes, rest of stock moved to mills for hulling

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation has achieved its procurement target in the current samba season.

The corporation exceeded its target of 12 lakh tonnes of paddy on Monday, when procurement touched 12.10 lakh tonnes. In composite Thanjavur district alone, it purchased 9.5 lakh tonnes. In Thiruvarur district it bought 4.08 lakh tonnes, followed by Thanjavur with 3.75 lakh tonnes and Nagapattinam, 1.84 lakh tonnes.

Hulling of paddy is in full swing. Except 3.75 lakh tonnes, the rest of the paddy stock has been moved to rice mills for hulling. By August the entire hulling operations will be over, say corporation officials.

With the State Government firm on supplying quality rice to family cardholders, the officials are maintaining vigil on the mills. As the corporation is supplying quality paddy for hulling, they are insisting the mills give back the same quality of rice after hulling. They have taken action against some mills, which indulged in malpractice.

    More than comfortable

Regarding rice stock position, the officials say it is more than comfortable. The corporation has a stock of 4.2 lakh tonnes and the Food Corporation 5.8. lakh tonnes, meant for Tamil Nadu. As offtake of rice through the public distribution system in the State is about 2.9 lakh tonnes, with the present stock position the corporation can manage for the next three months without difficulty.

As there is possibility of good kuruvai crop this year thanks to the comfortable storage position in the Mettur dam, procurement will also be good this time, the officials add.
