Election of four more MLAs challenged

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The election of four more MLAs has been challenged by way of election petitions in the Madras High Court.

The former All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Minister P.V. Damodaran challenged the election of S. Mani (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) from Pongalur constituency, alleging that postal votes and those polled in the electronic voting machines were counted simultaneously. He also said DMK cadres intimidated his polling and counting agents. He sought to declare the election of Mr. Mani as null and void.

Challenging the election in Marungapuri, Rokkaiah Malik of the DMK said Chinnnasamy (AIADMK) won the poll by misleading the electorate. She said the winning candidate still faced inquiries into the illegalities committed during his tenure as the Poonampatti Village Welfare Committee president.

The election of Velmurugan (PMK) form Panrutti constituency too has been challenged. In his petition, Sorathur Rajendran (AIADMK) alleged that the postal votes had not been properly counted and that PMK cadres had indulged in booth capturing on the poll day.

Independent candidate M. Thangamuthu has challenged the election of Chandra (AIADMK) from Rajapalayam. According to the petitioner, though Ms. Chandra was a Christian, she had declared herself a member of the Scheduled Caste. Her real name was Glory Chandra, though she had declared it as Chandra. With this, the number of election petitions filed in the High Court has gone up to 45. Monday was the last day to file election petitions.
