Ronaldo breaks scoring record

Brazil beats a spirited Ghana 3-0, enters World Cup quarter-finals

DORTMUND: Ronaldo scored his record 15th World Cup goal on Tuesday, and Adriano and Ze Roberto added two more to give Brazil a 3-0 win over Ghana and secured the side a spot in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldo became the tournament's all-time leading scorer in the fifth minute after a brilliant step-over that beat a defender and then the goalkeeper. The striker broke the offside trap near midfield after a pass from midfielder Kaka.

Adriano added to Brazil's lead in a breakaway move in the first-half injury time, using his left thigh to complete a right-flank cross from captain Cafu. Defender Lucio started the play at midfield, giving the ball to Kaka, who then found Cafu on the right side.

Replays showed Adriano appeared to be offside when he found the net. Fans were unhappy when the big screen at the stadium flashed the replay.

EXPLOSIVE SPEED, EXQUISITE TOUCH: Ronaldo, hoodwinking Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson, is set to score the opening goal during Brazil's 3-0 victory in a World Cup last 16 match in Dortmund on Tuesday. He went past the former German forward, Gerd Muller's mark of 14 strikes for most goals in the competition.

Ze Roberto added the third goal in the 84th minute, getting past the goalkeeper and finding the net. After allowing the early goal, Ghana pushed forward and pressured Brazil, which was forced to rely on counter-attacks. Although Brazil threatened, the Ghanaians had most of the scoring chances throughout the match. Gyan was, however, sent off in the 81st minute for diving.
