Some tips to conserve electricity

Act mandatory for energy intensive industries

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Electrical Inspectorate has encouraged consumers to adopt ways to ensure energy efficiency. The State Government in 2005 appointed the inspectorate as the designated agency to monitor consumers' compliance with the Energy Conservation Act.

The Act, passed in Parliament in September 2001, provided for a legal framework, institutional arrangement and a regulatory mechanism at the Central and State Governments level to embark upon energy efficiency drive in the country.

It provided for voluntary compliance for the five-year-period following its enactment.

Compliance with the Act was being slowly made mandatory for those identified as `designated consumers' by the Central Government.

Designated consumers include energy-intensive industries such as thermal power stations, fertilizer manufacturing, cement, iron and steel, pulp and paper industries and railways.

Addressing a technical session organised by the Tamil Nadu Electrical Installation Engineers' Association `A' Grade two days ago, S. Appavoo, Electrical Inspector, Government of Tamil Nadu, said though the Act was not applicable to households directly, consumers could adopt energy efficient ways to bring down overall energy consumption.

Chief Electrical Inspector K. Shanmuga Sundaram earlier spoke on the need for energy conservation.

Supply of bulbs

The Inspectorate proposes to make Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) available at TNEB bill collection centres.

A 15-watt CFL produces the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb.

An arrangement to deduct cost of these bulbs in several instalments will also be made, said an official.
