Flyover projects run into council roadblock

Staff Reporter

Civic body's works committee puts off approval for the projects

  • Committee's okay needed to table resolution in the council
  • Move might set back government desire to get early start

CHENNAI: The Works Committee of the Chennai Corporation, which is dominated by the AIADMK councillors, has deferred its approval for starting work on four flyover projects. This could set back the DMK Government's plans to get an early start on the projects.

The committee met last Friday and its chairman, V. Sukumar Babu, who is also the AIADMK floor leader in the council, deferred the resolution on development of four flyovers on grounds that the members were not aware of the subject till the last minute.

The flyovers mentioned in the resolution are: North Usman Road - Kodambakkam Main Road junction at an estimated cost of Rs. 9.72 crore; Chamiers Road - Turnbulls Road junction at an estimated cost of Rs.12.5 crore; G.N. Chetty Road - Thirumalai Pillai Road junction at an estimated Rs.16.5 crore; and Usman Road - Doraisamy Salai at an estimated Rs.19.8 crore.

The committee's approval is needed to table the resolution in the council.

There are allegations that the AIADMK might be adopting delaying tactics in view of the local body elections due this October. But Mr. Sukumar Babu denied them. "The only reason for deferring the resolution was that we did not have enough time to study it. Also eight members of the Committee did not receive the resolution copy in advance. It was tabled only on the day of the meeting," he said.
