Porur crematorium under utilised

Staff Reporter

Residents in adjoining areas not aware of its existence, say officials

CHENNAI: Porur panchayat's electric crematorium is under utilised, say officials.

The crematorium, set up at a cost of Rs. 85 lakh three years ago, is often ignored in favour of the Besant Nagar conventional `open' crematorium.

Moreover, residents in adjoining areas are not aware of its existence, said Panchayat president Sivaprabhu.

This is eating into the Panchayat's development funds, which could have been used for essential development work, he said.

An electric crematorium has been a long-standing demand of residents' associations in municipalities like Ambattur.

Porur panchayat is probably the first in the State to have introduced the electric crematorium facility, Mr. Sivaprabhu said.
