Councillors oppose move to downgrade municipality

Staff Reporter

It will deprive the local body of its benefits, they say

TAMBARAM: At a time when special village panchayats and even village panchayats in Tamil Nadu want their local body status upgraded, the Ullagaram Puzhuthivakkam Municipality has proposed a resolution to downgrade its status.

However, councillors cutting across political affiliations opposed the resolution and staged a walk out at the meeting in protest.

During a routine meeting of the municipality last week, one of the resolutions on the agenda was that the local body should be `downgraded' as a village panchayat. Councillors took strong exception to the resolution stating that if the Municipality's status was downgraded, the local body would lose most of its benefits and privileges it was entitled to right now.

Meet put off

The council meeting was subsequently put off. At present, the local body is classified as a third grade municipality, having been elevated from village panchayat in 2004.

With a population of about 30,000, its annual revenue is about Rs. 3.5 crore.
