CHENNAI: A 15-day exhibition of Co-optex saris and churidhar or salwar suits was inaugurated at Sir P.T. Showroom in Pondy Bazaar, T. Nagar, on Monday. The exhibition, titled `Mangayar Choice', will sell cotton and silk saris and cotton salwar suit materials. Saris from Madurai, Arni, Kanchipuram, Salem and Paramakudi are on sale. The showroom will offer the usual 20 per cent discount on all varieties. N.K.K.P. Raja, Handlooms and Textiles Minister, who inaugurated the exhibition, said the aim of holding the exhibition was to ensure that all the silk saris produced by weavers across the State were sold. "About Rs.82 crore worth of stock lies unsold. This exhibition is aimed particularly at women. If the sales is good the exhibition period will be extended," the Minister said. The department is also planning to upgrade a couple of Co-optex showrooms in the city on a par with showrooms run by private organisations. Efforts are also on to set up new commissions to improve the sale of weavers' products. The exhibition is expected to help 6 lakh weavers who are part of Co-optex. "Four lakh families depend on them," Mr. Raja said.
The price of silk saris ranges from Rs.4,000 to Rs.15,000. Low cost silk saris range from Rs.2,500 to Rs.3000. Cotton saris, sold as part of the `Chithirai Collection', range from Rs.250 to Rs.1,000. Salwar suits, sold as part of the `Yuva Collection', are priced between Rs.250 and Rs.400. M. Malik Ferozekhan, Director, and R.N. Choubey, Managing Director of Co-optex, were present.
