Five of family injured in attack

BANGALORE: Five members of a family, including a woman, were injured when an armed gang attacked them at the busy Hudson Circle while they were coming out of the Magistrate Court complex on Nrupathunga Road on Tuesday afternoon.

Munna Khan (36) and three others, who were accused in an attempt to murder case, were acquitted by a magistrate court on Tuesday. Akbar Ali of Yarabnagar had filed a case against them.

After the court proceedings, around 3.30 p.m., Munna Khan and four others were driving towards their Yarabnagar house in a vehicle. When a rival gang led by Akbar Ali allegedly trailed them in two cars, Munna Khan and his family members tried to rush towards the nearby Ulsoor Gate police station for safety.

However, the Akbar Ali gang intercepted Munna Khan's vehicle near Hudson Memorial Church and allegedly attacked the five with choppers and swords, injuring them. The Ulsoor Gate police, who learnt of the incident, rushed to the spot.

On seeing policemen, the six attackers ran away, abandoning the two cars. The police chased them till Sampangiramanagar, but in vain. Of the injured, two have been admitted in Victoria Hospital and another in NIMHANS, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ulsoor Gate sub-division) B.B. Ashok Kumar told The Hindu . Munna Khan, who suffered severe injuries, said that the armed men would have killed them, had the police not reached the spot immediately.

Akbar Ali and his brother Dewan Ali, against whom there is a history sheet in the Banashankari police station, had allegedly murdered Munna Khan's father and brother in separate incidents.

On September 16, 2004, Munna Khan's brother Adil Khan, a sand transporter, was chased and hacked to death in Banashankari police station limits.

In 1999, Dewan Ali had allegedly murdered Munna Khan's father, Ismail Khan, over a marriage dispute. Fearing that Adil Khan would avenge his father's death, Dewan Ali had murdered him. He was also jealous of Adil, who owned 10 lorries, as he was prospering in the sand transport trade, the police said.
