Medicos Forum submits memorandum to Kalam

NEW DELHI: The Medicos Forum for Equal Opportunities called on President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam on Monday and submitted a three-page memorandum apprising him of what they called "the open discrimination against the reserved category students and doctors being resorted to by certain members of the faculty and the administrative authorities in different medical colleges of Delhi including the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences''.

Medicos Forum for Equal Opportunities member Anoop Saraya said: "The Director of the Institute P. Venugopal and a section of the faculty took active part in the anti-reservation agitation in the name of maintaining the autonomy of AIIMS. The manner in which the Director allowed the official machinery to be used for the day to day running of the anti-reservation agitation is an open challenge to the Constitution of the country. Both the Government and Dr. Venugopal are claiming to be working for preserving the interests of AIIMS without realising that the first and foremost interest of an institution like AIIMS lies in serving the multitudes of poor patients.''

"We demand effective steps be taken to stop the ongoing victimisation of reserved category students and doctors. Also, the Government must act to ensure strict implementation of the reservation for reserved category and the role of AIIMS Director in abetting and encouraging the anti-reservation agitation should be investigated and strictest action as per law be taken against him,'' he added.

Resident Doctors

Meanwhile, reiterating its support to the AIIMS Director, members of the Resident Doctors' Association have threatened to stop work and march to the Prime Minister's residence in case any attempts were made to "vote out'' the Director at the July 5 "extraordinary'' meeting.

RDA president Binod Patro said: "The meeting as we understand is a veiled attempt to try and vote out the Director. In case this happens we will stop work.''
