dated June 29, 1956: Commonwealth PMs' meet

Nine Prime Ministers of the Commonwealth opened a ten-day conference in London on June 27 with a wide ranging examination of the effects of Soviet foreign policy changes on the world situation. Some of the Prime Ministers, including Sir Anthony Eden of Britain, reviewed the problems raised by Western and Communist possession of the hydrogen bomb. Sir Anthony Eden reported on his talks in London last April with Russia's leaders, Marshal Bulganin and Mr. Khrushchev. Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru in turn spoke of his own visit to Russia and of his impressions gained from the return visit of Marshal Bulganin and Mr. Khrushchev to his country. An official communiqué issued after the first two-hour meeting, said: "The first plenary session of the meeting of the Commonwealth Prime Ministers was held at No. 10, Downing Street, on June 27. It was attended by the Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Union of South Africa, India, Pakistan and Ceylon. The Prime Minister of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was also present."
