This Day That Age
R. Wilson (Britain) caused a major upset in the men's singles of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London on June 27 when he defeated Budge Patty (US), a former champion and No. 4 seed this year, 12-10, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Patty was the third seeded player to be beaten. The other two were S. Davidsson, who lost to A. Cooper, and Drobny, who lost to R. Krishnan in the first round on June 25. Krishnan had to battle for five sets against Candy before qualifying for the third round, 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. It was an uneventful match until the final set. In the first game, Krishnan broke through to lead. But he was fortunate to do so. A series of incidents, with the bespectacled Australian leading 40-love, led to the break. First, a doubtful line decision went against Candy, then his racquet slipped from his hand after he had made a stroke, and finally Candy double-faulted. But the Australian came back to crack Krishnan's service in the sixth game. Candy again held a point for a break-back in the eighth, but Krishnan, with a superb backhand passing shot, held it to lead five-three. Candy presented an easy smash in the ninth game for Krishnan to make no mistake. Impassive throughout the match, Krishnan smiled as he left the court, saying "I was lucky my shots were going right for me."
