Protest against `apathy' of textile company in Sattur

Compensation sought for those thrown out of job

DEMAND: C.M. Noormansoor, headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, speaking to those protesting against the Bhoruka Textiles management at Sattur in Dharwad on Wednesday.

DHARWAD: Workers of Bhoruka Textiles under the aegis of Dharwad Zilla Mazdoor Sangha staged a one-day sit-in in front of the factory at Sattur here on Wednesday.

They alleged that 700 workers had been forced to face hardships owing to the apathy of the management.

The factory has been closed since December 23, 2003. Although the State Government had imposed a ban on closure of the factory pending an order by the Labour Court, the management had succeeded in getting a stay order from the High Court, they alleged.

The workers had appealed to the Government to prevent selling or handing over of factory property. But no action had been taken, they alleged.

They urged the Government to initiate measures to force the management give compensation to the workers. M.D. Savanur, president of the sangha, called upon the protestors to be prepared for intensive agitation. Datta Dorle, president of the Dharwad unit of BJP, said he would take up the issue with the district-in-charge minister. The protesters submitted a memorandum to C.M. Noormansoor, headquarters assistant to the Deputy Commissioner.
