Letters to the Editor
The merger of Mittal Steel with Arcelor is more than just a triumph for a businessman who happens to carry an Indian passport. The Mittal-Arcelor deal was a debate on national identities, cultures, and corporate endeavour. On racism, and on "us" and "them." Wherever Lakshmi Mittal may function from, the man who grew up in Kolkata has done India proud.
A. Meghana,
* * * The merger was by no means a cakewalk for Mr. Mittal. It was the result of a hard fought battle. His victory has paved the way for other Indian companies to venture abroad. He has sent a strong signal to the capitalist lobby that the third world is in no way inferior when it comes to meeting challenges.
Inamdar Ramchandra,
* * * The merger is another feather in Mr. Mittal's cap. He has swung the deal from criticism of "monkey money" (monnaie de singe) to a "winning offer." Although his company has no presence in India, he has become a national icon for India Inc.
P. Jai Shankar,

G. Raghavendra,

The Arcelor-Mittal deal has vindicated the fact that in international business racism loses out to talent and, of course, to money. The deal will embolden more non-Europeans and non-Americans to participate in international business. Hats off to Mr. Mittal for creating a new business paradigm.
