Minor clashes mark polling in Vizianagaram

Correspondent

Women turn out in large number

VIZIANAGARAM: Barring minor incidents of clashes between Congress and TDP cadres, allegations of rigging and impersonation, polling for the 34 ZPTCs and 536 MPTCs in the district was by and large peaceful. Polling that started on a dull note in the morning picked up gradually and recorded an average of 59 per cent by 3 p.m. At majority of polling stations long queues of women were witnessed. At Venkataramanapeta in S.Kota mandal police used mild force to disperse clashing TDP and Congress groups.

Two persons were injured in clashes between the rival parties at Davalapeta in Gajapathinagaram mandal, seven at Koduru in Badangi mandal, four at Kurmarajupeta in Salur mandal and at Kerla in Gurla mandal eight persons were injured in the clashes between TDP and Congress groups. They were being treated in various Government Hospitals. At Panasabhadra in Jiyyammavalasa mandal polling was stopped for sometime due to short receipt of ballot papers. The centre received only 400 ballot papers against the requirement of 650.

Alleging rigging at Penta, Pakki and Alajangi villages in Bobbili mandal, TDP district committee president and ZPTC candidate S.V.Ch. Appala Naidu submitted a representation to the Returning Officer. In a counter petition Bobbili MLA Sujaya Krishna Ranga Rao alleged that the Congress agent was driven out of the polling centre at Penta by the TDP cadres.

Polling stalled

At Madhupada in Gajapathinagaram mandal, a blind woman P.Gairamma complained to the Returning Officer that the presiding officer cast her vote against her wish. No one was reportedly accompanied to assist the blind woman. Following the incident, Congressmen objected to the official's action and polling was stalled for over 10 minutes. At Boppadam in Nellimarla mandal, 17 MPTC ballot papers to be polled in Nellimarla (2) polling centre ward cast in Boppadam polling centre. As Nagavali river was in spate following heavy rain in its catchments area during the last two days polling at Vanaja and Rabba villages in Komarada mandal was delayed.
