Ponting Ceat World Cricketer of the Year

MUMBAI: Australia dominated the Ceat Cricket Ratings (CCR) 2005-2006. Ricky Ponting accumulated 131 points and was named CCR International Cricketer of the Year, ahead of Shane Warne (111) and Irfan Pathan (105).

Australia was adjudged CCR Team of the Year (161), far ahead of second-placed India (93), while Mike Hussey (72) edged out M.S. Dhoni for CCR Outstanding Debutant award. Sunil Gavaskar, the adjudicator for the cricket ratings system, announced the various CCR winners at a media briefing organised at the Cricket Club of India here.

Harsh Goenka, chairman of the RPG Group, revealed the establishment of Ceat India Cricket Ratings for the first time to recognise and reward outstanding domestic performers in Indian cricket.

Award for Powar

Mumbai and India off-spinner Ramesh Powar was named the Domestic Cricketer of Year for 2005-2006, totalling 53 points. Tamil Nadu's S. Badrinath (domestic batsman), Uttar Pradesh's Praveen Kumar (best bowler and most promising youngster) were other winners identified on basis of performances in Ranji Trophy Elite Group matches.

"At the Ranji Trophy level, domestic players make a huge contribution to Indian cricket, raising the level of competition. There are several unsung players whose contribution will be recognised and rewarded," said Gavaskar, identifying Indian Railways Sanjay Bangar as one domestic achiever who went on to play international cricket.

The cash prizes and trophies will be given at an awards function scheduled for October 2006.

The Ceat XI for 2005-2006: Wasim Jaffer (Mumbai, 31 batting points), Dinesh Mongia (Punjab, 25), S. Badrinath (TN, 32), Amol Muzumdar (Mumbai, 27), Jacob Martin (Baroda, 29), Vinayak Samant (Mumbai, 11 wicketkeeping points), Ramesh Powar (Mumbai, 45 bowling points), Siddharth Trivedi (Gujarat, 41), Praveen Kumar (UP, 41), Joginder Sharma (Haryana, 39), Saurashish Lahiri (Bengal, 37).

Prize money break-up for various categories: International Cricketer of the Year: $10,000; International Team: $20,000; International Debutant: $4000; Domestic Cricketer of Year: Rs. 2,00,000; Domestic Batsman: Rs. 1,00,000; Domestic Bowler: Rs. 1,00,000; Most Promising Youngster: Rs. 1,00,000.
