No reduction of tax on petrol, diesel
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE:
Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Wednesday ruled out reduction in the sales tax or entry tax on petrol and diesel. The Centre had recently increased the prices of these commodities.
Replying to Arvind Limbavali (BJP) in the Legislative Council, Mr. Yediyurappa said the Government had, in the budget, promised that no fresh taxes would be imposed. Besides, it had not increased sales tax or entry tax on any commodity. In compliance with its firm stand on taxation, there was no need to reduce taxes on petrol and diesel, he said. V.R. Sudarshan (Congress), M.P. Nadagouda (Janata Dal-United) and others suggested that the Government help the people by reducing sales tax or entry tax on petrol and diesel to facilitate a reasonable cut in their prices.
Mr. Yediyurappa claimed that even after the Centre increased the prices, the price of diesel per litre in the State was Rs. 37.51, while it cost Rs. 39.96 in Maharashtra.
Several members complained that Mr. Yediyurappa was deliberately ignoring the comparatively low prices of petrol and diesel in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
