Bangalore: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has threatened to disrupt counselling at the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell and launch a State-wide agitation if the Government fails to respond to demands on the fee structure for courses in private professional colleges. Representatives of the ABVP staged a protest in front of the CET Cell here on Wednesday opposing the fee structure for professional courses. Students who took part in the protest were dispersed by police.

They said the Government's decision on fees in private colleges was acceptable only to college managements and rich students. Students from poor and middle-class families would not be able to join courses because the fee was high, they added. ABVP members demanded that fee concession be made applicable for 60 per cent of students in engineering, medical and dental courses. The fee should be Rs. 10,000, Rs. 30,000 and Rs. 20,000 for engineering, medical and dental courses, respectively, they said.

SFI protest

The Students' Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest demanding a reduction in fee for courses in private professional colleges.

Members of the SFI said the Government was trying to exploit students from poor families.

Prasad, SFI secretary, said members of the federation had submitted a memorandum to D.H. Shankaramurthy, Minister for Higher Education, seeking a review of the fee structure. He said they planned to hold a State-wide protest on Thursday if the Government did not look into their demands.
