Pondicherry: Leaders of various political parties, their candidates and also Independent nominees have intensified their campaign since Tuesday to woo voters for the third and final phase of civic polls scheduled for July 1. The final phase will coverthe four commune panchayats (Ariyankuuppam, Bahoor, Mannadipet and Nettapakkam) here. The Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee leader P. Shanmugham accompanied by Industries Minister of Pondicherry V. Vaithilingam campaigned in a number of wards in Bahoor and other commune panchayats in its vicinity. All India Congress Committee general secretary and MP V. Narayanasamy held a door-to-door campaign. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam convenor here R.V. Janakiraman was on a campaign trail in the areas along with the candidates sponsored by the party in the panchayat polls on Wednesday. Candidates approached voters working in the farms in a bid to ascertain their support. The second phase of poll held on June 27 witnessed a heavy voter turn out in rural areas against the urban pockets. The third phase polling is for 53 councillors, 53 village panchayat presidents and 437 village panchayat ward members. A total of 1,53,097 voters are eligible to cast their votes. Of them, women voters number 78,662 and men voters 74,435. There are 1,571 candidates in the third phase of polls to the four commune panchayats after 44 candidates were declared elected unopposed, according State Election Commission sources here.
