Three killed in road accident

ANANTAPUR: Three persons were killed and three other were seriously injured when an unidentified vehicle ran over them, when they were crossing the road at Nallaguttapalli village in Tanakallu mandal of the district on Wednesday. According to the police, the deceased were identified as B. Venkataramana (34), Siddappa (43) and Shaik Shahvali (41). The three died on the spot. Three other seriously injured were given first aid at the Government Area Hospital in Kadiri and were later shifted to the General Hospital here. -Staff Reporter

Doctor to attend ATA meet

TIRUPATI: Rayapu Ramesh Babu, former president of Tirupati unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) and founder of voluntary organisation, BOSS & CIPCA, has been invited to attend the ninth convention of American Telugu Association (ATA) to be held at Los Angeles from Jun 30. He will deliver a lecture on `AIDS prevention - Role of youth in blood donation' at the meet, according to a release said. -Staff Reporter

Repoll in Kurnool

KURNOOL: The district election authorities recommended repoll at three places in Kurnool district. Varkur in Kodumur mandal, Katarukonda in Krishnagiri and Nadichagi in Kautalam mandal will go for repoll.

Meanwhile, the polling percentage was calculated at 67 per cent in the district. -Staff Reporter

Kadapa: A lunatic's prank resulted in a group clash at Kothapalle in Guvvalacheruvu. A stone pelted by a mentally deranged person caused head injury to a TDP man leading to whipping up of passions and Congress and TDP men clashing. - Staff Reporter

TDP candidate hurt in violence

ADILABAD: Congress activists in Kagaznagar allegedly damaged a jeep belonging to Telugu Desam Party (TDP) workers in a clash after polling was completed on Wednesday in the panchayat raj elections. According to police some TDP workers entered into an argument with Congress workers from Nazrulnagar, which resulted in a skirmish in which a TDP MPTC candidate Tushar suffered injuries. - Stafff Reporter

Takes over as in-charge V-C

WARANGAL: Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor V. Gopal Reddy took over as in-charge V-C of Telangana University on Wednesday. Osmania University Vice-Chancellor Mohd. Suleman Siddique who is the in-charge Vice-Chancellor of Telangana University is going on a private visit to the United States and Canada. In his absence, till July 15, 2006, Prof. V.Gopal Reddy will be the in-charge. - Staff Reporter

Arrest of nuns condemned

HYDERABAD: The Minority Cell of the Telugu Desam Party has condemned the arrest of nuns of Missionaries of Charity in Tirupati and accused the police of harassing them. In a statement, Basa Krupanandam, vice-president of the cell said the charges framed against the nuns were false and baseless. The sisters were only serving the homeless and destitute in tune with the motto of their organisation. They also demanded an inquiry into the incident and apology from the Chief Minister and the Minority Welfare Minister. - Special Correspondent

Court directive to Principal Secretary

HYDERABAD: A Division Bench of the Andhra Pradesh High Court comprising of Justice B. Prakash Rao and Justice Ramesh Ranganathan on Tuesday directed the Principal Secretary (Home) to answer why proceedings should not be initiated against him under the Contempt of Courts Act. The Bench issued these suo motto proceedings when it noticed the documents pertaining to reinstatement of Sub-inspector of Police adjudicated earlier by the courts. In this third round of litigation several proceedings came to the notice of the court wherein the officer not only did not take the correct stand but the court felt that it was a defiant stand. - Legal Correspondent

Police, Maoists exchange fire

Rajahmundry: Maoists and the police exchanged fire in East Godavari district on Wednesday. According to SP G. Srinivasulu the incident occurred near Ramanikota of Y. Ramavaram mandal. He said that when the police were undertaking combing operations in the area a group of Maoists opened fire at police and the police retaliated. No casualties were reported. - Staff Reporter

Rain likely in coastal districts

VISAKHAPATNAM: Under the influence of the southwest monsoon, rain or thundershowers are likely at many places in coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 48 hours. Isolated heavy rain is also likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh during the same period, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre on Wednesday.
