ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha municipal council will hold an emergency session at 2.30 p.m. on Thursday, to discuss the issue of purchase of excavator by the municipality. The discussions on the issue that came before the council on Wednesday failed to reach a conclusion. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) members were engaged in a heated argument in the council on Wednesday over the issue. While the Opposition pointed out that the old excavator of the municipality could be repaired and used municipal chairman P.P. Chitharanjan said it was not practical as it was very costly. The council is expected to take a decision on the issue on Thursday. UDF councillors staged a walkout on Wednesday pointing out that they were not getting the copy of the minutes of the proceedings. They said they had drawn the attention of the chairman on the issue but it did not produce any result. UDF councillors pointed out that the municipal laws stipulated that the copy of minutes be given to councillors within 48 hours. Later, they returned to the council meeting following an assurance by the municipal chairman that copies would be given to councillors promptly in the coming days. The council also approved allotment of Rs.34.96 lakhs for the renovation and enlargement of 15 roads in the municipality.
