Amenities to 533 unapproved layouts in the city is likely to figure in the meeting Another major issue for discussion is the revision of the schedule of rates for road and other civil works Progress of new water schemes for suburbs facing sharp population increase may also be discussed
COIMBATORE: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin looks set to have a hectic day out here on July 1 when he will review the functioning of the local bodies in the district. By virtue of being in the city for most part of the day, he will be confronted by a host of problems faced by the people in the city and the outskirts. It is learnt that the Corporation is already drawing up a list of issues and schemes that need the direct attention of the Minister.
Water scheme
Mr. Stalin arrives here on June 30 to participate in the launch of a water scheme in Avanashi and a function in Tirupur that day. The review will be on the next day in the city. With the local body elections scheduled for October, the effort of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its allies is to improve on the gains made in the Assembly elections by implementing as many development works as possible in the next three months. Or, at least begin the major ones that have electoral implications.
IT park
The growth that the proposed information technology park may bring about and the infrastructure such a flyovers and good roads that are needed to meet it may be discussed, according to Corporation sources. Amenities to 533 unapproved layouts in the city - an issue of immense election significance - will definitely figure in the talks with the Minister. Another major issue for discussion is the revision of the schedule of rates for road and other civil works.
Rise in cost
Contractors' reluctance to take up works owing to sharp rise in cost of construction materials is holding up many road works. Councillors fear people's wrath during elections if road condition continues to be bad. Progress of new water schemes for suburbs facing sharp population increase and the need for good road link with the city are representations that may come from municipalities and special panchayats located along the Corporation's border.
