Award for music director

Pandit Ravi Shankar Sharma has scored music for over 200 films "For me, Chennai is a good and auspicious place. It is home to some of the great filmmakers and musicians."

CHENNAI: Veteran music director Pandit Ravi Shankar Sharma was given the Sanskriti Kalashree award for 2006 recently.

Music director Ravi, as he is known, has scored music for over 200 films in different Indian languages and most of them are popular even today. He has received various awards from different forums and was honoured by the Government of India with the Padmashree in 1971.

Mr. Ravi said he was happy that he was in Chennai where he met A.V. Meiyappan and other stalwarts of Indian cinema. "For me, Chennai is a good and auspicious place. It is home to some of the great filmmakers and musicians."

Chennai residents have a reputation of being lovers of good music, said AVM Saravanan, who was the first recipient of the award.

He said he found many songs of the director mesmerising.

Every year, the association gives Kalashree awards and the list of recipients include AVM Saravanan, S.P. Balasubramanium and Vyjayathimala Bali.

Sanskrithi members sang some 20 songs composed by Ravi, much to the appreciation of the audience.
