Gurudas seeks appointment with PM

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Communist Party of India (CPI) MP Gurudas Dasgupta has sought an appointment with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to apprise him of the "police terror" perpetrated against employees of Liberty Shoes in Haryana.

Mr. Dasgupta has already written to Dr. Singh in this regard. Several workers were injured in the melee and 47 others were arrested on murder charges.

"The situation at Karnal is similar to what happened at the Honda Motors in Gurgaon last year. It is total police terror and they are acting at the behest of the employers," Mr. Dasgupta said on his return from Karnal.

He said those arrested had been booked for murder. "When I asked the Deputy Commissioner how many policemen had been injured and the nature of property damaged by the workers, he had no answer," Mr. Dasgupta said. Some of those arrested had been picked up from their homes at night along with their family members and not from the site of action, he claimed. Mr. Dasgupta sought the release of those arrested and an early settlement of the dispute.
