Woman drowned

Thrissur: Rosili, 46, of Paroli House, died on Wednesday after plunging into a well, despite the best efforts of her husband, Mathai, to rescue her, the police said. Both were rescued from the well by the Fire and Rescue Force personnel. Rosili was rushed to the hospital, but her life could not be saved, the police said. — Staff Reporter

Herbal farmers' convention held

KOZHIKODE: A herbal farmers convention was organised here on Wednesday under the aegis of the Malabar Medi-green Planters' Society. T.Shobeendran, environmentalist, who inaugurated the convention, opined that growing plants and nurturing them had a soothing impact on the human psyche. The convention chalked out the programmes to be implemented for growing herbal and medicinal plants in the campuses of Government and educational institutions. — Staff Reporter

Water levels of reservoirs increase

KOCHI: Water levels of major reservoirs in the State have increased. According to the figures released for the week ending June 26 by the Central Water Commission, the level at Idamalayar reservoir increased from 438.88 ft. to 445.18 ft. and the level at Kallada reservoir increased from 328.48 ft. to 333.73 ft. The level at Idukki reservoir increased from 2311.89 ft. to 2315.64 ft. When compared with the water levels recorded during the same period last year, Idukki reservoir showed an increase of 11.77 ft., Kallada 12.86 ft. and Idamalayar 19.66 ft., according to a press release. — Staff Reporter

Cable operators go on strike

KOCHI: Blank screens greeted television viewers in Kerala on Wednesday as cable TV operators switched off their services for 12 hours to protest against a five per cent `luxury tax' proposed in the State Budget last week. President of the Kerala unit of the Cable TV Operators Association E. Jayadevan said the `blackout' was `total' all over the State. - UNI

Church opposes selling of CSB shares

THRISSUR: Catholic Church has protested against Catholic Syrian Bank's reported selling of shares under private placement at a lower price.A meeting of the CSB Protection Committee, headed by the Archbishop, held here on Wednesday, criticised the reported move of the CSB management to replace Article 4 of the bank's Memorandum and Articles of Association. — Staff Reporter

Murder case: three arrested

Thrissur: Three persons wanted in the Pattathanamkulangara Rajan murder case have been arrested by the police. The body of Rajan, 56, a merchant, was found near his shop at Blangad on July 4, 2005. The police on Wednesday said that Rajan was murdered by a gang on July 4 at dawn. The motive for the murder was theft. — Staff Reporter

RBI holiday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and all the offices of the bank will remain closed on July 1 for public transactions. An official press note said here on Wednesday that June 30 would be the last working day for the accounting year 2005-06. — Staff Reporter

Finding upheld

Kochi: The High Court on Wednesday upheld the finding of a scrutiny committee and KIRTADS proposing action against R. Rajendra Prasad, Deputy Transport Commissioner, and his relatives. As per the scrutiny committee's report on 1996, it was found that the petitioners had secured jobs on the basis of a forged caste certificate that they belonged to Hindu Gavara community. — PTI

Youth killed in accident

Thiruvananthapuram: A 22-year-old youth, Kumar, of Pulluvila, was killed when his motorbike was hit by a KSRTC mini-bus at Plavila, between Neyyattinkara and Balaramapuram, on Wednesday evening. The body has been kept in the mortuary of Medical College Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Applications invited

Thiruvananthapuram: Applications are invited from candidates for the National Board of Examination (DNB) courses in Radiotherapy, Anaesthesiology and Pathology at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC). Application forms along with the necessary documents including a demand draft of Rs.500 drawn in favour of the director, Regional Cancer Centre, payable at Thiruvananthapuram along with three passport size photographs should reach the Registrar, RCC, on or before July 5.
